Updated: Oct 25, 2024

In just two years, I have had the privilege of working with over 30 emerging beauty brands.

Hey Gorgeous!

I am Felicia, a branding expert with a passion for helping beauty entrepreneurs create powerful and unforgettable brands.

In just two years, I have had the privilege of working with over 30 emerging beauty brands, refining their strategies to help them stand out in a competitive market.  I also run a membership programme specifically designed for beauty professionals who are ready to take their branding to the next level and achieve consistent growth.

In this article, I will share key strategies and insights on how small beauty businesses can thrive by building a strong, consistent brand, developing a unique identity, utilising social media, and creating a loyal community.

These steps will help you build a memorable brand.

  • Understand the Power of Brand Consistency

  • Develop a Unique Brand Identity

  • Use Social Media for Brand Growth

  • Find out how Beauty Businesses Can Succeed on TikTok

  • Why you should build a Strong Brand Community

What is Brand Consistency and Brand Identity?

I know, I know—consistency sounds like a cliché that everyone throws around these days.

But trust me, when I talk about brand consistency, I am talking about making sure every element of your brand—your logo, colour scheme, voice, messaging, and customer

experience—is perfectly aligned across all platforms.

Consistency is absolutely crucial in the

beauty industry, where building trust and creating emotional connections are key to fostering customer loyalty.

Why Brand Consistency Matters for Small Beauty Businesses:

  • Builds Trust: A consistent brand helps customers know what to expect, nurturing

reliability and trust.

  • Increases Recognition: Repeated use of brand elements makes your business more

recognisable.

  • Encourages Loyalty: Research shows that customers are more likely to remain loyal

when they see the same messaging and aesthetic.

Practical Tips for Maintaining Brand Consistency:

  • Create a Brand Style Guide: Define your brand colours, fonts, voice, and messaging guidelines, and use this guide across all channels.

  • Train Your Team: If you have a team, you must ensure everyone understands and embodies your brand’s values in every customer interaction.

  • Audit Regularly: Regularly review your online and offline materials to ensure they align with your brand’s style.

For example, Glossier’s consistent skin first, makeup second philosophy has built strong brand recognition.

What is a Unique Brand Identity?

A unique brand identity encompasses everything from your brands personality and visual elements to the overall customer experience. It’s essentially how your brand is perceived by others, which is crucial in the beauty industry because perception drives trust and loyalty.

Importance for Beauty Entrepreneurs:

  • Differentiates You from Competitors: In a saturated market, a distinct brand identity is key to making your business memorable.

  • Creates Emotional Connections: A well-crafted brand identity resonates with your audience on a personal level, encouraging them to connect and engage.

  • Encourages Word-of-mouth Marketing: When customers feel connected to your brand, they are more likely to share their positive experiences with others.

Steps to Create a Unique Brand Identity:

  • Understand Your Target Audience: Identify their needs, preferences, and values.

  • Define Your Brand Personality: Are you bold and edgy or calm and sophisticated or just wild and disruptive lol? Let this shine through in your messaging and visuals.

  • Tell a Story: Share a narrative that resonates with your audience—whether it’s your personal journey, product benefits, or brand mission.

  • Brainstorm your brand values: List 3-5 core values that define your brands essence (e.g., sustainability, inclusivity, innovation).

  • Create a brand mission statement: Write a concise statement that captures your brands purpose and what it aims to achieve.

  • Develop a mood board: Collect images, colours, and fonts that visually represent your brands personality and aesthetic.

For example, The Drunk Elephant differentiated itself by emphasising clean ingredients and transparent labelling, building trust with consumers.

Using Social Media for Brand Growth

The Role of Social Media in Branding

For beauty entrepreneurs, social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are invaluable for showcasing your work, building relationships, and reaching new customers.

Why Social Media is Crucial:

  • Direct Engagement: Social media allows for direct, real-time interaction with your audience, fostering community and loyalty.

  • Visual Storytelling: Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are perfect for sharing before-and-after transformations, tutorials, and product demos.

  • Cost-Effective Marketing: Social media marketing is often more affordable than traditional advertising and can offer a higher ROI for small businesses.

Tips for Using Social Media Effectively:

  • Stay Consistent: Use the same colour schemes, logos, and messaging across all social media platforms.

  • Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments and messages and encourage user-generated content with branded hashtags. DM’ing potential clients has been great for me personally.

  • Use Edutainment;: Combine education with entertainment. To be honest, I am not the best at this, but from my observation, this is a great way to share valuable tips and tutorials while making your content engaging and fun.

Using TikTok to Stand Out

TikTok is going WILD and has definitely emerged as a powerful platform for beauty brands,

particularly small to medium-sized businesses. With its highly engaging, video-driven

format, TikTok allows brands to showcase their creativity and connect with a vast audience.

How Beauty Businesses Can Succeed on TikTok:

  • Tap into Trends: TikTok is known for its viral trends, which often start within the beauty community. Participating in trending challenges or creating content around popular hashtags like #GlassSkin or #Hairstyling can boost visibility. With 74% of users saying TikTok content has transformed their beauty routines, staying current with trends can drive product discovery and brand awareness.

  •  Master Storytelling: TikToks unique storytelling format is perfect for capturing attention and building a narrative around your brand. Use short, engaging videos to educate, entertain, and inspire. Focus on relatable content that connects with viewers emotionally, whether it’s through product tutorials, customer testimonials, or behind- the-scenes looks

  • Optimise Posting Times and Frequency: Consistent posting is key on TikTok. Verified business accounts often post 2-3 times per week, with top brands posting even more frequently.

  • Experiment with different types of content—like vlogs, challenges, or product reviews—to see what resonates best with your audience.

  • Utilise TikTok’s Commerce Features: TikTok offers several tools to help beauty brands sell directly through the platform. Create shoppable videos and use image catalogues to allow users to browse and purchase products seamlessly. Consider hosting live streams to engage with your audience in real-time, offering exclusive promotions and limited-time offers to drive sales!

For example, Huda Kattan (@hudabeauty) effectively used Instagram and capitalised on TikTok’s viral potential to build a massive following. By sharing tutorials, product tips and personal stories, she engages authentically with her audience. helping Huda Beauty become globally recognised.

Building a Strong Brand Community

Why Community Matters

Building a strong brand community leads to increased loyalty and word-of-mouth marketing. It makes customers feel like they are part of something more than just a transaction.

Strategies for Building a Brand Community:

  • Create Engaging Content: Share interactive content like polls, Q&A sessions, or Insta or TikTok lives.

  • Network like a crazy person: Choose 2-3 events each month that align with your brand, whether they are industry conferences, local pop-ups, or online webinars.

  • Meeting people face-to-face or engaging in live virtual events allows your personality and brand energy to shine, making a lasting impression.

  • Feature Your Customers / Clients: Where Possible: Showcase customers using your products or services to create a sense of belonging. Shout out loyal customers in your stories where possible because, trust me, people love to feel special.

  • Offer Exclusive Perks: Provide early access to new products, discounts, or exclusive content. Consider inviting your most loyal clients to VIP events, such as product launch parties or special in-store experiences, to make them feel valued and part of an inner circle.

For Example:  The Ordinary’s transparent ingredient lists and commitment to education have fostered a passionate community of skincare enthusiasts. By creating a space for open discussions and sharing expert advice, they have built trust and loyalty among their customers. Interestingly, Beauty Bakerie has successfully built a strong community with its unique brand identity, offering playful and creative experiences, and organising events, meet-ups, and virtual interactions to connect with their customers on a deeper level.
